Onward to Inuvik
We stopped short of Dawson City to camp on the Yukon River. Back in the land of free firewood and loving it.
The next day, we took the ferry across to check out town. A pretty neat little slice of history seemingly preserved in time.
Our main stop was at the visitor center for the Northwest Territories to get the dirt on the Dempster Highway road conditions and weather forecast. We assumed we’d be here for several days waiting for a good weather window and making sure the bus was ready for it. As luck would have it, the weather forecast looked great and the lady at the VIC told me her cousin drove the road a few days ago and it was fine. Also, could I deliver a package about 300 km?
Since the package was for a fellow traveler – one walking around the world – I figured this was our duty and promptly made space. After a quick trip to a very expensive grocery store, we hosed down the bus and we were off.
We only drove the first 80 km or so before calling it a day. There’s a handy campground and nature center that made a good first destination. We were only there for an hour before the first VW van rolled up. Urusula and her sheep dog drove up from Vancouver to do some camping around the Arctic Circle.
A few hours later, Caleb and Ariana pulled in. Small world. Shawn the Sheep Dog had a playmate and it was looking like we had a caravan.
