The Haul Road

The Dalton is supposed to be a really big deal. One of the most remote stretches of road in the U.S. At the end is just an oil field work site and the Arctic Ocean. It’s the farthest north you can drive in the Americas, so it’s been on our list since we made it to Ushuaia.

We’ve had some warnings, but nothing really dire. Take lots of water. Take 2 spare tires. Watch for bears. The primary warnings were about how much it would cost us if we broke down somewhere along the way. We’d live – we’d merely be bankrupt.

On the first day, we only made it as far as the Arctic Circle. Not bad. We had to drive through wildfires on either side of the road at one point and it was hot – really hot – and smokey. But, we just pressed the pedal to the floor and barreled through it. The sky was smokey orange, but the smoke didn’t do anything to keep the mosquitoes away. It looks like we’ll be spending quite a bit of time inside the bus.

I’ve loved the posts over the past month – really remarakble, and I can’t wait to see the end of the Haul road where it meets the Artic.

Glad you all are still well, and enjoying the road – keep safe,

brings back memories of when I lived full time in AK. We now have a summer place on the Kenai, that we haven’t been to for two years now. Thanks for letting me live a little vicariously. Now if I only had the confidence to drive our diesel Westy up there….
