Salvador Folly
We were both so dumbstruck that we just stood there staring, not speaking. It helped that two women walked in front of us. One of them looked at the painting and exclaimed “Que lindo!”
I suppose there is some cultural reference we are missing. Probably about a connection to the land and fauna. A love of animals. Something like that.
Still, for us Amercanos, it seemed pretty weird. Just art, I guess. We sat at a cafe and tried to come up with explanations. There must be some kind of Brazilian legend or folklore or something. Later, I walked around town and took some more photos. I don’t think I was affected in any way.
…and we have the answer: This is from an actual photo of a tribe in Maranhão which has/had the tradition of breastfeeding the cubs of the animals they hunted.
