Chillin’ in Chillan

Valle las Trancas is a little village and the place to stay away from the ski resort at Nevados de Chillan. And, it’s where the pavement ends. After that, it’s 8 km along a winding gravel road up to the base of the hill. On our first day, we decided that this has to be the best drive up to a ski slope anywhere. I didn’t want to bogart all the fun, so Bode took over.

The conditions were typical for spring anywhere. Only half the mountain was open and it was soggy mashed potatoes by early afternoon. It was still lots of fun.

From the hill, you can see the steaming volcanic hot springs just a stone’s throw from the parking area. Worth a quick dip after a hard day’s work.

The unexpected surprise at the end of the afternoon? Snow. It dumped.
