Way Up the Glacier
It turns out that the people that make crampons make them in children’s sizes (micro-spikes). Kids need to climb glaciers too.
We started the day with a little Roadside Potato – apparently a McCarthy institution – and found the crampon rentals next door.
After hiking to the Root Glacier toe, we strapped on our spikes and hoofed it up with ease. It wasn’t long before the kids started finding clear blue pools to take a drink. We passed a few large cravasses and eventually ended up at a large glacial lake. If you bring your ice axes and ropes, this looks like as a good place as any to work on your ice climbing skills.
By the time we made it back to town, we were almost too exhausted to stop by the saloon for a pitcher of PBR. Almost. Everyone slept quite well that night.
