McCarthy

McCarthy, Alaska. Population 22. More in the summer – lots of guides (river, ice climbing and tour). A ramshackle town with leaning buildings and a pioneer feel. It really is out in the middle of nowhere. In fact, you have to cross the river by footbridge, and then walk a mile and half to town.

It served as the place to find trouble for those working at the nearby Kennecott mines. Kennecott was dry, and McCarthy, 5 miles down another bumpy dirt road, offered bars, the company of women, and some gambling. It still offers up the liquor at the Golden Saloon – $15 for a pitcher of PBR. Actually, a decent price in Alaska.
