Talkeetna

We pulled into the quaint (but touristy) town right right after their legendary 4th of July parade. We didn’t get to explore the town right away, because as usual Bode met a great group of local kids as soon as we parked the bus. He spent the next few hours running through the woods and climbing trees with them, while we took turns checking out the main street.

We finally got his attention around dinnertime, and hit up the local brewpub- Denali Brewing. We’re trying to eat Alaskan when we do eat out, tonight’s special was reindeer meatloaf. Surprisingly tasty.

We camped near the town square, which seemed to be allowed during the summer months.

The vibe here is definitely cool, but we only had a day to explore it. There is so much to do in Alaska, we had to keep moving south.

Is it my imagination or are the mosquitos no longer an issue? See more bare flesh and less screens in the photos recently.

I forgot to mention a very important fact about Talkeetna. Its mayor since 1997, is a tailless cat named Stubbs. A survivor for sure, Stubbs has encountered a dog attack, being shot by a BB gun, hitching a ride on a garbage truck and falling into a restaurant’s deep fryer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stubbs_(cat)

Mosquito quantities depend on the wind and rain. Seems to change in every location, and sometimes daily in the same location. Definitely worse when north of Fairbanks.
