Rammed Earth in Todos Santos

I was telling our neighbor about how I was interested in rammed earth architecture and had an itch to build something. Naturally, she knew several people with rammed earth homes and people with experience building them. I couldn’t pass up the offer to go for a ride and check out some local examples.

The first place was an awesome little cabana that pretty much fit what I had in mind. A damp dirt/cement mix is packed into forms, then finished with locally fabricated steel doors and windows. Simple. Small. Cool.

The next place was in progress and a more typical example. Rammed earth blocks are stacked, cemented and later covered in plaster. Basically, adobe.

Our tour was cut short by a flat tire, so we’ll pick this up later. In the mean time, maybe we’ll have to start  looking for a little plot of land and a big pile of dirt…

Lot’s of attractive qualities and it’s perfect for a passive solar design. If it’s good enough for the Great Wall of China…
