Concours d’Elegance
Lots of fancy cars in Pacific Grove and Carmel. I saw a lifetime’s worth of Ferrari’s, Lotus’ and Lamborghini’s – just driving down the street. The world record for most expensive car ever sold was set here over the weekend – 38 million dollars for a ’62 Ferrari GTO.
I was casually walking by a guy getting into his 90’s era Aston Martin, holding a ‘Best in Show’ trophy. He was in the middle of telling a racist joke to another guy. Money buys lots of things – but not class.
So, I was only slightly chagrined each time I saw a $200,000 car on the side of the road waiting on a tow truck. There were plenty of them.
Bode kept asking questions about why these cars were worth so much and why there were red carpets in parking spaces. I did my best to explain, but really couldn’t do it. I love cool old cars, but the whole thing really is pretty stupid. Spend all that money on a car… and you can’t even sleep in it.
But which car that you saw would you like most to drive for an hour?
I’d take any of hose for a spin
I’m thinking the classic James Bond Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger. Or, the Mercedes with gull-wing doors.
Give me a Duesenberg Silver Ghost any day.
Love seeing pics of your Dad. He looks great!
I like the picture of the beat up Olds Station Wagon on the side street, fitting for Carmel. Probably belongs to the under paid employee in one of those swanky expensive shops. And the picture of the Ford work truck and Ferrari end to end at the gas station. Beautiful cars none the less.
Did you drive Red Beard around with those expensive cars?
That, my friend, is no Oldsmobile. That is a Buick Roadmaster station wagon. Probably the smoothest ride of any of the vehicles featured here. It’s like somebody decided to take a La-Z-Boy recliner and build a car around it. A sweet sweet ride.
We drove Red Beard around and got some comments. “What year?” seems to start every conversation lately.
