Snow Shoe

I’ve never been on snowshoes.  We had a pair hanging in our storage shed, so I decided to give it a go.

It’s a little tougher than I had thought. I imagined I would magically float on top of the snow and that’s not even close. The shoe decking (the fat part) acts as snow compressor and just mashes everything down under you. You can still sink pretty deep. I think I was in a few feet of snow and was sinking about a foot. Better than nothing, but still a lot of work.

Makes me wonder how the forest animals seem to do it so easily.

Most modern snowshoes are relatively small and made for following trails. For breaking trail on loose snow you need a pair of big ol Faber classic wood and babiche snowshoes.

Looks like a nice place to showshoe though!

The proof in their usefulness is to take them off and go the same place…

I pulled one off and stepped down to see how far it went. I never hit bottom… so, they were useful.
