Goodbye Wordly Possesions
We spent all of last week getting ready for the yard sale. We had piles and piles of things in the basement, and Friday we tried our best to organize them.
I hate having yard sales, and Saturday morning I remembered exactly why. The sale was to start at 9 (no early birds, please!) and people were there by 8. Not just people walking by, but the yard sale professionals. They were there, bargaining, looking disgusted at our things and rolling their eyes at our prices. But they still bought it.
One of Jason’s super hero traits is an unbelievable amount of patience. While I found many different reasons to go inside and get away from it all, Jason was out bargaining with the skills of a border town street vendor. All I can say is, way to go. We did great.
Although we made more than we were expecting, we had tons and tons of crap left. An entire garage full, plus some things we forgot to put out. So we reposted our signs and held another sale on Sunday.
The second day was much more laid back, and I was able to stay out there all day. Unbelievably, we sold almost as much as we did the first day, even though everything had already been picked through.
The two best parts of the weekend? A VW not in my driveway, and all this crap out of my life.
my name is terry mohr and I used to work with Jason at eksigent. I love reading your thought process in coming to the decision to take a road trip of a life time. My family and I also had done something similar, although much more conservative when compare to your adventure, by moving the family half way around the world seeking new culture and adventure. After reading some of your blog, I am more confident than ever that all of us are doing the right thing.
it is so great to see other great people like yourself taking a dive into the deep end of the pool. It must be such a liberating experience for you and your family.

Just a heads up… My husband is living vicariously through you guys. 🙂 Me? I’m one of the yard sale pros. 😉 I promise I don’t roll my eyes (when others can see).

I was just told about your blog by two different people recently and I had to try and find time to read some of your early posts because my husband, three year old son, and I are nearly at the same place that you were then. We are in the process of selling or giving away almost everything and heading out to see the world in our 1967 Aristocrat Loliner.
I’m also starting a blog (as is my husband) but I’m not 100% ready to share it with the whole world but I’m trying to be more “out there” about it. I love that you are still traveling 4 years later.
We plan to travel in North America for the rest of 2014 then circumnavigate the globe for about a year starting in 2015 (we’ll probably leave “Lois” behind though.)
I will follow your blog and try to catch up on your old posts to see if I can learn from your adventure. It’s great to see someone succeed at it as it’s exciting but scary at the same time.
And I really hope our paths cross some time. We also live in Alameda… for 3 more weeks.
